Youn Sun Nah was born and raised in Seoul in a musical family. She learned to play the piano in her childhood and graduated in literature at the University of Konkuk in 1992. The following year, she was invited by the Korean Symphony Orchestra to sing gospel and subsequently made her first steps recording and performing. After performing in various musicals, Youn decided to go back to school to study music and singing. She decided to settle in Paris in fall 1995. Around the year 2000 Youn made her first tours and festivals. She started receiving the first of a long list of distinctions, such as a decoration of the insignia of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, presented by the Cultural French Ministry in 2009 and also the Sejong Prize of Culture awarded by the Korean government in 2013. Since 2007, Youn Sun Nah performs in duo with the guitar player Ulf Wakenius. In 2011 they have been joined by the accordionist Vincent Peirani, and the double bass player Simon Tailleu. In duo and quartet, she has been playing festivals like Montreal, Marciac, Monterey, Java or Montreux, where she has been entrusted with the presidency of the jury for the Voice Competition in 2013. In the same year, Youn has been appointed as South Korea’s goodwill ambassador for UNESCO’s International Jazz Day. Her voice and her personality have impacted and touched the hearts all over the globe. She did about 500 – mostly sold out - concerts between 2009 and 2015 and 3 albums (two of which made gold in France and Germany). Throughout this time she has received many distinctions from her peers (Académie du Jazz in France, Echo Jazz in Germany, Korean Music Award in Korea) and has appeared at the 2014 Winter Olympics’ closing ceremony. In 2015, The National Theatre of Korea made Youn the artistic director of the Korean traditional music festival Yeowoorak. In May 2017, Youn Sun Nah released her latest album “She Moves On”.
